Privacy policy

This notice describes how BetterSee collects, uses, and shares information when you use the BetterSee website, the iOS and Android apps, and the BetterSee Cloud service. It reflects how the product works today — not a generic template.

Who we are

BetterSee is an ad-free home-camera app for iCSee and Xiongmai households. The service is operated at bettersee.app. We host accounts and camera configuration on Laravel Cloud and open Cloud ID sessions through BetterSee-operated relay workers. We do not run ads, analytics SDKs, or third-party trackers in the app.

Account information

When you register we store your first name, last name, email address, a hashed password, and a language preference (English, Portuguese, or Spanish). You may also enable two-factor authentication or passkeys. We keep a Sanctum API token so the phone can stay signed in, plus standard security fields such as email verification time and a remember-me token.

Households, members, and invitations

Cameras belong to a household, not a single login. We store household names, rooms, membership roles (owner or member), and which household you last used. Owners can invite others by email. Invitation emails are sent through our mail provider. We store the invite email and a hashed token (the raw link is shown once and expires after seven days).

Camera configuration

You provide camera names, usernames, passwords, Cloud IDs (device serials), IP addresses, ports, channels, and optional LAN RTSP paths. Camera passwords are encrypted at rest before they are saved. Credentials are used only to connect to your cameras. They are not written to client logs or relay worker logs.

Live video, recordings, and snapshots

Live video is streamed to your devices. Local cameras play on your network. Cloud ID cameras pass through BetterSee relay workers (WebRTC, MSE, or HLS) so the phone does not run the camera SDK. We do not operate a BetterSee cloud DVR: SD-card recordings stay on the camera and are streamed on demand. We do cache a JPEG snapshot per camera (and short recording thumbnails) so the dashboard and player can show a still while video opens. Those stills live on our object storage or app disk, not as a searchable video archive.

Alarms and detections

When a Cloud ID camera reports motion, PIR, or similar events, the relay can send us an alarm (event type, time, channel, and related metadata) and an in-app database notification. Some cameras also send detection stills (for example face or license-plate results). We store those JPEGs so the camera screen can show the last detection. These notifications stay in your BetterSee account; we do not send them to advertising networks.

Billing

Plans are billed to the household owner. On the web we use Stripe Checkout and the Stripe Customer Portal (customer id, payment-method brand and last four digits, subscription status, and trial dates). In the iOS and Android apps we use App Store and Google Play purchases only. We store store product ids, original transaction ids, and subscription status so Cloud can keep access in sync. We do not store full card numbers. Stripe, Apple, and Google process payments under their own privacy policies.

The app on your phone

The native app talks to BetterSee Cloud over HTTPS. After login we store a session token in the device Keychain (or an encrypted file if Keychain is unavailable) and keep a local SQLite copy of your user, household, and camera records so the app can open quickly and stay signed in. Camera passwords synced to the device are re-encrypted with the device key. Finding a camera on Wi-Fi uses local-network discovery (LAN IPs and ports). Uninstalling the app or signing out removes that on-device copy.

How we use information

We use this information to create and secure your account, share cameras with household members you invite, play live video and recordings, remember language and appearance, bill the correct plan, send household invitation emails, show alarm and detection history, and operate and debug the Cloud and relay. We do not use your camera video or detections for advertising, and we do not sell personal information.

Who we share information with

Household members you add can view that household’s cameras and streams. BetterSee relay workers receive the camera connection details needed to open a Cloud ID session. Stripe, the App Store, and Google Play receive the billing data required to charge and restore a subscription. Mailgun sends invitation email. Laravel Cloud hosts the application and database. We may disclose information if required by law. We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers.

Cookies and similar technology

The website uses cookies that are required to run the service: a session cookie, a CSRF cookie, and an optional remember-me cookie. Language preference may be stored in the session. Light, dark, or system appearance is stored locally in the browser or app. We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site trackers, or third-party analytics pixels.

Security

Account passwords are hashed. Camera passwords are encrypted at rest. Invitation tokens are stored as SHA-256 hashes. Device tokens use the platform Keychain when available. Traffic to BetterSee Cloud uses HTTPS. Filament admin access is limited to allowlisted emails. No security measure is perfect; please use a unique password and keep camera firmware updated.

How long we keep information

Account, household, and camera records stay until you delete them. Deleting your account from Settings removes the user and related tokens, store subscriptions, and memberships. Snapshots are overwritten as new stills arrive. Alarm and detection records (including detection images) stay until the related camera or account is deleted. Relay media sessions are short-lived and are not kept as a video library. Stripe and the app stores keep payment records under their own rules. Operational server logs are rotated.

Your choices

You can update your name, email, language, and appearance in Settings, change household membership and invitations, edit or delete cameras, manage billing on the web (Stripe) or in the store apps, and delete your account. To ask a question about the data we hold, or to request a copy or correction, email us at the address below.

Children

BetterSee is a household camera product for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this notice

If we change how BetterSee collects or uses information, we will update this page and the date above. Material changes will be posted here before they take effect.
